Overview

Vazhachal Falls is not a typical high-plunge waterfall but a wide, cascading series of rapids on the Chalakudy River. Located within the Vazhachal Forest Division in Kerala's Western Ghats, it's about 5 kilometers from the more famous Athirappilly Falls. The water rushes down a rocky, inclined surface, creating a powerful and visually striking flow, especially during the monsoon season. The area is surrounded by dense, green forests that are rich in biodiversity, including several species of hornbills.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Vazhachal Falls is from September to January. During this period, the monsoon has subsided, but the river still carries a powerful flow, making the falls a spectacular sight. The weather is cool and pleasant for walking around. The monsoon months of June to August see the falls at their peak fury, but heavy rains can sometimes disrupt travel plans. The summer months from March to May are hot, and the water level in the river reduces significantly, diminishing the waterfall's impact.
Peak Crowd: October-January, especially on weekends and public holidays, due to pleasant weather and post-monsoon flow.
Moderate Crowd: September, February-March, and weekdays during the peak season.
Low Crowd: April-June due to summer heat and reduced water levels, and weekdays during the heavy monsoon period (July-August).

How to Reach

Air

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), located approximately 40 km away. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the falls by taxi from the airport.

Train

Chalakudy Railway Station (CKI) is the nearest major railway station, about 35 km away. Another major hub is Thrissur Railway Station (TCR), around 65 km away. Taxis and buses are available from both stations.

Road

The falls are well-connected by road from Chalakudy town, which lies on National Highway 544 (linking Salem and Kochi). You can drive or hire a cab from major cities like Kochi (65 km) or Thrissur (65 km).

Local Transport

The most common way to get around is by hiring a private taxi or auto-rickshaw from Chalakudy. Limited KSRTC bus services operate on the Chalakudy-Malakkappara route and stop at the falls.
