History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

This collection of vintage cars is the personal property of the House of Mewar. The vehicles were acquired over the years by various Maharanas of Udaipur. The museum was inaugurated on 15th February 2000 by Shri Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur, the current head of the family, to showcase this automotive heritage. Its location is the original Motor Garage of the Mewar State, which was built at a time when only a few ruling families in India owned cars. The purpose was to preserve these historical vehicles and allow public access to a unique part of Udaipur's royal history. Each car is carefully maintained by the palace staff and is still in running condition.

Significance

The museum's significance lies in its unique and well-preserved collection of royal vehicles, each with a specific connection to the history of the Mewar dynasty. It's not just a display of old cars, but a tangible link to the past, reflecting the tastes and technological advancements of a bygone era. Many of the cars, such as the custom-built Rolls-Royces and Cadillacs, are rare examples of automotive craftsmanship. The collection serves as an important historical record of the royal family's lifestyle and their transition into the modern age, making it a key attraction for anyone interested in Indian royalty and automotive history.
