Located near the Vizhinjam fishing harbor, this marine aquarium provides a compact yet interesting look into the underwater world. Managed by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), it showcases a variety of marine life found in the region. Visitors can observe species like lionfish, surgeonfish, clownfish, squirrelfish, and even piranhas in well-maintained tanks. The aquarium also features tanks with colorful corals and other invertebrates, creating small but detailed aquatic ecosystems.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kovalam is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and dry. However, since the Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium is an indoor facility, it can be visited comfortably throughout the year. Visiting during the monsoon season (June to September) can be a good way to escape the rain for an hour. To enjoy the surrounding area like the beach and harbor, the winter months are ideal.
Peak Crowd: November to January and on weekends, coinciding with the peak tourist season in Kerala.
Moderate Crowd: February to April and September to October, particularly on weekday afternoons.
Low Crowd: May to August, during the peak summer and monsoon seasons, especially on weekdays.

How to Reach

Air

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is the nearest airport, located about 14 km away. A taxi from the airport to the aquarium takes around 30-40 minutes.

Train

Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC) is the closest major railway station, approximately 13 km away. It is well-connected to all major cities in India. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available from the station.

Road

The aquarium is located just off the main Kovalam road. It is well-connected by a network of roads. Regular KSRTC and private buses run from Trivandrum city to Kovalam and Vizhinjam. Taxis can be hired from anywhere in Trivandrum or Kovalam.

Local Transport

Auto-rickshaws are the most common form of local transport to get to the aquarium from Kovalam beach area (around ₹80-₹100). Ride-hailing apps like Ola and Uber are also operational. You can also rent scooters in Kovalam for more flexibility.
