History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

Established in 1994, Vythiri Resort was one of the early pioneers of eco-tourism in Kerala. The concept was developed by a group of individuals who wanted to create a travel destination that co-existed with nature rather than displacing it. The resort was built with minimal impact on the surrounding rainforest, using local materials and construction techniques that blend with the environment. Its development helped popularize the idea of sustainable and nature-based hospitality in the Wayanad region, particularly the unique concept of luxury treehouse accommodations.

Significance

Vythiri Resort is significant for its role in promoting sustainable and eco-friendly tourism in India. It successfully demonstrated a model where a commercial resort could operate in harmony with a sensitive ecosystem like a tropical rainforest. Its unique treehouses, some of which are accessible only by a unique water-powered elevator, have become an iconic feature of Wayanad's tourism landscape. The resort is popular among visitors seeking an immersive nature experience without forgoing comfort, especially couples and families.
