History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

White water rafting is a relatively new adventure activity in Goa. It was introduced around 2012 as a joint initiative between the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) and private adventure sports operators. The primary goal was to boost tourism during the monsoon season, which was traditionally considered the off-season. By leveraging the rain-fed Mhadei River, the state aimed to showcase its ecological diversity and position itself as a year-round destination, moving beyond its sun, sand, and sea image. The venture has been successful in attracting adventure enthusiasts and promoting eco-tourism in Goa's hinterlands.

Significance

This activity is significant for promoting monsoon and eco-tourism in Goa. It highlights the natural beauty of the state's interior, specifically the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By creating a popular attraction during the rainy season, it helps diversify Goa's tourism portfolio and provides seasonal employment. For visitors, it offers a unique adventure experience that contrasts sharply with the typical beach holiday, revealing a wilder, greener side of Goa that many are unaware of.
