Willingdon Island - Kochi's Historic Man-Made Port Hub

Willingdon Island is a testament to the vision of British engineer Sir Robert Bristow. In the 1920s, he conceived the idea of creating a new island from the soil dredged while deepening the Vembanad Lake to create a modern port for Kochi. The project was completed in 1936 and named after Lord Willingdon, the then-Viceroy of India. It quickly became the commercial heart of the city. During World War II, the island was equipped with an aerodrome and served as a strategic military base.
