Explore one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes, known for its vast expanse, birdwatching, and boat rides amidst Himalayan foothills.
Wular Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, covering a vast area that changes with the seasons. Its massive expanse of water is fed by the Jhelum River and is surrounded by towering mountains, including the Haramukh peak, creating a dramatic landscape. The experience here is centered on the sheer scale of the water body and its natural environment. Visitors can hire a shikara or a motorboat to explore the lake, observing the lives of local fishermen who harvest water chestnuts and fish for a living. The lake's atmosphere changes throughout the day, from misty mornings with calm waters to windy afternoons where the lake can resemble a small sea. It's a place for quiet observation, photography, and experiencing the raw, expansive nature of Kashmir away from the more manicured gardens of Srinagar. The water is dotted with small islands, one of which has the ruins of a 15th-century structure built by King Zain-ul-Abidin.
