The Badrinath temple typically opens in late April or early May on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya and closes for winter around the festival of Bhai Dooj in October/November. The exact dates are announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee each year.
Badrinath is one of the four most sacred pilgrimage sites (Char Dham) for Hindus. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form of Badrinarayan and is mentioned in ancient scriptures like the Mahabharata and Puranas, making it a key spiritual destination.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (approx. 314 km away), and the nearest railway station is in Rishikesh (approx. 297 km away). From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Badrinath. The route involves a scenic but challenging mountain drive.
Besides the main temple, you can visit Tapt Kund (natural hot springs), Neelkanth Peak, Mana Village (the last Indian village before the China border), Vasudhara Falls, and the Bheem Pul rock bridge.
There is no official age restriction, but due to the high altitude (over 3,300 meters), the journey can be physically demanding. It is advisable for the elderly, young children, and people with respiratory or heart conditions to consult a doctor before planning the trip.
Badrinath offers a range of accommodation options, including government-run guest houses (GMVN), dharamshalas, ashrams, and private hotels catering to various budgets. It is highly recommended to book in advance, especially during the peak pilgrimage season.
Tapt Kund is a natural thermal spring located just below the temple. It is considered to have medicinal properties, and devotees believe that taking a holy dip in its hot water purifies the body and soul before entering the Badrinath temple for darshan.
While the temple remains open, visiting Badrinath during the monsoon (July-August) is generally not recommended. The region is prone to heavy rainfall, which can lead to frequent landslides and road blockages, making the journey risky and unpredictable.
