I'll be straight with you—getting there takes a little effort. It's located about 18 kilometers from Kawardha town in the Kabirdham district. If you're flying in, Raipur is your best bet for an airport. The drive from raipur is roughly 135 km. You can hire a cab for around ₹2500 to ₹3000, and it takes roughly 3 hours. The roads are surprisingly decent. You'll pass through huge stretches of farmland and small villages. It's a nice drive, especially if you grab some local tea at a roadside stall along the way. Sometimes you'll have to brake for a herd of cows crossing the highway, but that's just standard driving here.

You've probably never heard of Bhoramdeo. And honestly, that's what makes it so great. It's an ancient temple complex in Chhattisgarh that looks a lot like Khajuraho, just without the insane crowds. A road trip here from Raipur takes about 3 hours. You drive through these quiet villages and hills until you suddenly spot 11th-century carvings popping up out of nowhere. It's totally weird but awesome. Look, if you're into history or just want some quiet time, you'll love it here. The local tribal festival in March is pretty wild, too.

Your Questions, Answered
The absolute best time to visit Bhoramdeo is during the winter months, from October to March. The weather is pleasantly cool, making it perfect for exploring the ancient temple complex and the surrounding Maikal hills. Summers (April to June) get scorching hot, often crossing 40°C, which makes sightseeing exhausting. The monsoon season (July to September) turns the forests lush and green, which is beautiful for nature lovers, but heavy rains can disrupt your travel and outdoor plans.
The easiest way to get there is to fly or take a train to Raipur, which is about 130 km away. From Raipur, you can hire a direct taxi or catch a local bus to Kawardha town (about a 2.5-hour drive). Bhoramdeo is just 18 km away from Kawardha. Once in Kawardha, you can easily hire a local auto-rickshaw or a taxi to take you to the temple complex. The roads are generally in good condition.
Accommodation right next to the temple is fairly limited. Your best bet for staying close to the ruins is the Chhattisgarh Tourism Board's Bhoramdeo Tourist Resort, which offers basic but clean rooms for around ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per night. If you want more options, stay in the nearby town of Kawardha. Here, you'll find several budget and mid-range hotels. If you want to splurge, you can even book a heritage stay at the beautiful Kawardha Palace.
Besides the main Bhoramdeo Temple—often called the 'Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh' due to its intricate, erotic stone carvings—you should definitely visit Madwa Mahal and Cherki Mahal. These are smaller, fascinating 14th-century Shiva temples located just a kilometer or two away. If you love nature, drive up to Saroda Dadar, a stunning viewpoint in the hills perfect for sunset. The Kanha National Park border is also relatively close if you want to extend your trip into a wildlife safari.
You definitely need to try Chhattisgarhi staples! Look for local eateries serving Chila (rice flour crepes), Muthia (steamed rice dumplings), and Fara. In Kawardha, you'll easily find standard North and South Indian thalis at local dhabas for about ₹150-₹200 per meal. For a budget traveler, expect to spend around ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per day, including a basic hotel, local transport, and meals. If you hire private taxis from Raipur and stay at nicer resorts, budget around ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 daily.
Bhoramdeo is a very safe destination for travelers. However, because it is an active religious site situated in a rural area, you should dress modestly out of respect. Make sure your shoulders and knees are covered when entering the temple complexes. Since you will be walking around stone ruins and forested pathways, wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. Also, carry mosquito repellent and a water bottle, as shops right next to the smaller temples can be scarce.
