Bruges is basically a real-life fairy tale, minus the dragons. You'll walk along cobblestone streets, eat way too much chocolate, and probably get lost at least once. And that's exactly how you should experience it. Most people just come for a day trip from Brussels, but staying overnight changes everything. Once the tour buses leave around 5 PM, the canals quiet down and the whole place feels completely different.

If you're planning a trip to Belgium, Bruges is probably already on your list. Most people give it four hours between trains. That's the mistake.
The city empties out at 5 PM when the tour buses leave, and what's left is the reason to come. Below is how to do it properly, and how to avoid the traps that catch people who only have an afternoon.

I highly recommend visiting in the spring (April to May) or early autumn (September to October). The weather is mild, and you'll skip the massive summer crowds. If you love the holiday spirit, late November to December is magical for the Christmas markets and winter lights, though you will definitely need a warm coat!
Most travelers fly into Brussels Airport (BRU). From there, just hop on a direct train right from the airport station to Bruges. The ride takes about 90 minutes and costs around €16-€20. Trains run frequently, usually every 30 minutes, so you don't even need to book your tickets in advance.
Not at all! The historic center of Bruges is extremely compact and is best explored on foot. Most of the streets are cobblestone, making walking or cycling the most convenient and charming options. If your bags are heavy when you arrive, you can catch a quick bus or taxi from the train station to your hotel.
You can't miss a canal cruise—it's truly the best way to see the medieval architecture from a unique angle. Climb the 366 steps of the Belfry for stunning panoramic city views, visit the ornate Basilica of the Holy Blood, and take a peaceful stroll around Minnewater (Lake of Love). Tip: Book your Belfry tickets online to skip the long lines!
You have to eat Belgian fries from one of the iconic carts in the Market Square, and grab a loaded waffle from Chez Albert. For chocolate, skip the big international chains and visit local artisan chocolatiers like The Chocolate Line. Wash it all down with a 'Brugse Zot,' the only beer that is still actively brewed right in the city center.
Bruges can be a bit pricey, especially if you dine right on the main historic squares. For a mid-range trip, plan for about €100-€150 per day, excluding your hotel. This will easily cover a nice sit-down meal, some street food treats, a couple of local beers, and your attraction tickets. To save money, walk a few streets away from the Markt for cheaper, more authentic meals.
