But if you just stick to the main square, you'll be elbow-to-elbow with thousands of people taking selfies. The real city is so much better than that, you just have to walk a few streets over.

If you want to avoid the massive summer crowds but still get great weather, aim for May or September. The temperatures hover around a very comfortable 15-20°C (60-68°F), perfect for wandering the cobblestone streets all day. If you don't mind the cold, December is magical for the Christmas markets, but bundle up as it often drops below freezing! Summer (July and August) is beautiful but gets incredibly packed and accommodation prices skyrocket. Spring and early autumn offer the best balance of nice weather, reasonable prices, and breathing room.

Prague has one of the best and most affordable public transport systems in Europe! You really don't need taxis or ride-shares here. The trams and metro are incredibly reliable, clean, and easy to navigate. I highly recommend buying a 24-hour pass for 120 CZK or a 72-hour pass for 330 CZK to save time. Just remember to validate your paper ticket in the little yellow machines the very first time you use it! The historic center is super compact, so you'll also end up walking a lot. Bring very comfortable shoes for those relentless cobblestones.

You absolutely must walk across the Charles Bridge, but here is a pro-tip: go right at sunrise to beat the massive crowds and get breathtaking, peaceful photos. The Prague Castle complex is huge and takes a good half-day to explore, especially St. Vitus Cathedral. Down in the Old Town Square, watch the Astronomical Clock strike the hour—it's very touristy but a classic Prague experience. Finally, take the funicular ride up Petřín Hill to the mini Eiffel Tower for a stunning panoramic view of the whole city of a hundred spires.

Czech food is heavy, hearty, and delicious! You have to try traditional beef goulash served with fluffy bread dumplings (knedlíky). Another local favorite is Svíčková—beef sirloin in a sweet, creamy root vegetable sauce, topped with cranberries. While walking around the Old Town, grab a Trdelník (chimney cake) roasted over an open fire. Finally, you can't leave without having a famous local Czech beer (pivo), like Pilsner Urquell. A half-liter in a local pub usually costs just 50-65 CZK, which is genuinely sometimes cheaper than bottled water!

Prague isn't quite as cheap as it used to be a decade ago, but it's still much more affordable than Paris or London. For a mid-range budget, plan for about 1,500 to 2,500 CZK ($65 to $110 USD) per day. This easily covers public transport, a couple of hearty meals at traditional pubs, a museum ticket, and some beers. Hostels run about $25-45 a night, while a decent mid-range hotel will be $80-130. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere now, but it's smart to carry around 1,000 CZK in cash for tipping or small street stalls.
