The flight in is genuinely something. You come over the Remarkables and the plane drops into a tight valley between the mountains. Get a window seat.

The airport is small. Bags, taxi, and you're in town in about 15 minutes.

People ask about Queenstown before they've even booked, usually worried it's only for people who want to jump off things. The adrenaline stuff is everywhere, true. But you could spend a week here eating, drinking wine and looking at the lake and not feel you'd done it wrong.

FAQs

Your Questions, Answered

It really depends on what you want to do! If you're coming for skiing and snowboarding, winter (June to August) is perfect. For hiking, bungee jumping, and enjoying the lakes, summer (December to February) is your best bet. Autumn (March to May) is also gorgeous with fewer crowds and stunning fall colors, making it great for budget travelers.

You don't need a car to enjoy Queenstown. The local Orbus network is fantastic and cheap—it only costs $2 NZD per trip if you buy a Bee Card ($5 NZD) from the airport or a convenience store. The bus goes everywhere you need, including the airport, Arrowtown, and Kelvin Heights. Uber and local taxis are also available but can be pretty pricey.

You have to ride the Skyline Gondola for the best views of Lake Wakatipu, and race down the Luge track at the top. Thrill-seekers should try the original AJ Hackett Kawarau Bridge Bungee, which costs around $220 NZD. A relaxing cruise on the TSS Earnslaw vintage steamship to Walter Peak is also a huge favorite, usually taking about 3.5 hours.

Queenstown can be expensive, but you can manage your costs. For a budget traveler staying in a hostel and eating cheap meals, plan for $100-$130 NZD per day. A mid-range trip with a standard hotel, restaurant dinners, and a paid activity or two will easily run you $250-$350 NZD daily. Don't forget to budget extra for big adventure activities!

You can't leave without eating at Fergburger—it's world-famous and totally worth the hype. Expect to pay about $15-$20 NZD and wait in line for a bit. Next door, grab a hot pie from Fergbaker. For dessert, try the incredible warm cookies at Cookie Time on Camp Street. If you love wine, book a tasting tour in the nearby Central Otago region, which is famous for its amazing Pinot Noir.
