Ujjain is famous for being one of the seven sacred cities for Hindus (Sapta Puri) and for housing the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve most sacred Shiva shrines. It is also one of the four locations where the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years.
The best time to visit Ujjain is during the winter season, from October to March. The weather is pleasant and cool, which is ideal for sightseeing and participating in religious activities at the temples and ghats.
Ujjain is well-connected by rail and road. The Ujjain Junction railway station has trains from major Indian cities. The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore (IDR), about 55 km away, from where you can hire a taxi or take a bus.
The most important temple is the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple. Other significant temples include the Harsiddhi Temple, Kal Bhairav Temple, Chintaman Ganesh Temple, and the Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna is said to have studied.
The Shipra River is a sacred river in Hinduism. A holy dip in the Shipra is believed to purify the soul and wash away sins. The famous evening aarti at Ram Ghat and the ritual bathing during the Kumbh Mela are major attractions.
When in Ujjain, you must try the local Malwa cuisine. Popular dishes include dal bafla, poha with jalebi, and bhutte ki kees. The city also has many local sweets and snacks available in the markets near the temples.
The Bhasma Aarti is a unique and famous ritual performed daily at the Mahakaleshwar Temple at 4 AM. It involves waking Lord Shiva and adorning the lingam with sacred ash (bhasma). It is a powerful spiritual experience that requires advance booking to attend.
