Explore Goa's backwaters on the Cumbarjua Canal, a mangrove-lined channel famous for its wild crocodile population and unique boat safaris.
The Cumbarjua Canal is a 15-kilometer long, narrow waterway in Goa that connects two of the state's major rivers, the Mandovi and the Zuari. Lined with thick mangrove forests, this canal provides a look at a side of Goa far removed from its popular beaches. The main reason people visit is for the boat safaris that navigate these waters in search of its most famous resident: the Indian Mugger Crocodile. These crocodiles can often be seen basking on the muddy banks, camouflaged against the terrain, and a trip here offers a genuine wildlife spotting experience. During a boat trip, you'll slowly cruise through the quiet backwaters, with the boatman, who often doubles as a guide, pointing out the crocodiles and various species of birds. The ecosystem is rich, and you can spot kingfishers, herons, and other water birds. The journey also provides a glimpse into the local way of life, passing by small villages and fishermen at work. The atmosphere is quiet and focused on observation, making it a good activity for those interested in nature and a peaceful adventure.
