A high-altitude valley on the Nagaland-Manipur border known for its rolling dwarf bamboo hillocks, endemic lilies, and the two-day trek from Kohima.
Reaching Dzukou Valley requires a trek, usually starting from Viswema or Zakhama villages near Kohima. As you clear the steep forest ascent of the Viswema route, the landscape abruptly opens into a massive expanse of rolling green hillocks. There are no trees here, just dwarf bamboo covering the slopes, giving it a smooth, carpeted appearance. You will walk along a narrow, mostly flat trail carved into the hillside for about two hours before reaching the main rest house. The valley floor features winding streams with freezing, crystal-clear water and scattered white, charred tree trunks from past forest fires. The facilities at the top are completely utilitarian. Visitors sleep in bare-bones dormitories or pitch tents outside, eating simple meals of rice, dal, or instant noodles prepared at the rest house kitchen. You will notice a complete lack of plastic waste due to strict enforcement at the base. To access the main valley floor, you walk down a 30-minute trail from the rest house. During winter, the streams freeze over, and frost covers the bamboo, while summer turns the entire landscape a deep, striking green.
