A 17th-century Portuguese fort on a cliff in North Goa, now a heritage hotel with a historic church and sweeping sea views.
Located at the northernmost tip of Goa, Fort Tiracol stands on a cliff overlooking the mouth of the Tiracol River and the Arabian Sea. Originally built in the 17th century by the Bhonsle clan of Sawantwadi, it was later captured by the Portuguese and became a crucial part of their maritime defense. Today, the fort has been converted into a luxury heritage hotel, the Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel. The structure is compact, with robust laterite stone walls, turrets, and ramparts offering expansive views of the coastline, including Keri Beach to the south and the coast of Maharashtra to the north. Visitors can walk along the upper battlements, which provide an excellent vantage point for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset. Inside the fort's courtyard is the centuries-old St. Anthony's Church, which is still active and holds regular services. While much of the interior is part of the hotel, the church and the outer ramparts are generally accessible to day visitors. The atmosphere is quiet and removed from the usual tourist bustle of Goa, offering a distinct experience that combines history with dramatic natural scenery.
