An ethnographic museum in South Goa showcasing over 4,000 artifacts related to Goa's traditional agrarian lifestyle, art, and transport history.
The Goa Chitra Museum is an ethnographic museum that documents and preserves the material culture of Goa's traditional agrarian society. Founded by artist and restorer Victor Hugo Gomes, the museum showcases his personal collection of over 4,000 artifacts gathered over several decades. The main collection, 'Goa Chitra', focuses on tools, implements, and household items used in Goa before the arrival of electricity, offering a detailed look into the self-sufficient, eco-friendly lifestyle of the past. The exhibits are thoughtfully arranged to tell the story of Goan farming, food production, and daily life. The museum complex is divided into three sections. Besides Goa Chitra, there is 'Goa Chakra', which displays a unique collection of ancient wheels, carts, and carriages from across India, tracing the evolution of transport. The third wing, 'Goa Cruti', is a gallery dedicated to colonial and contemporary art, highlighting the cultural shifts and artistic expressions in Goan history. Visitors walk through indoor galleries and outdoor displays set within a small organic farm, providing context to the agricultural tools on display.
