Dominating the city skyline from a solitary rocky hill, Gwalior Fort is an expansive 8th-century complex featuring palaces, temples, and striking mosaic tilework.
Approaching Gwalior Fort, you immediately notice its massive 35-foot-high sandstone walls dominating the city skyline from the top of Gopachal Parvat. Visitors usually arrive via the steep Urvai Gate in a vehicle or by climbing the eastern Gwalior Gate path on foot. Once inside the complex, the first major structure is Man Singh Palace, immediately recognizable by its outer walls decorated with striking blue, yellow, and green ceramic tiles depicting ducks, elephants, and crocodiles. The fort area covers over three square kilometers, making it a sprawling site that requires significant walking under the open sky. Moving beyond the main palace, you walk along paved paths to reach other distinct monuments scattered across the plateau. The 8th-century Teli Ka Mandir stands out with its unusual 100-foot-tall Dravidian-style roof, while the nearby 11th-century Saas Bahu Temple features intricate stone carvings and a roof supported entirely without arches. You will also pass the white marble structure of Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod. Exploring the full complex involves walking over uneven stone paths and navigating narrow, steep staircases inside the palace chambers.
