Jaipur's iconic 'Palace of Winds', a five-story pink sandstone facade with 953 windows designed for royal women to observe public life unseen.
Hawa Mahal, often called the 'Palace of Winds', is one of Jaipur's most recognized landmarks. Its unique five-story exterior resembles the honeycomb of a beehive with its 953 small windows, known as 'jharokhas', which are decorated with intricate latticework. This pink and red sandstone structure was not a residential palace in the traditional sense; it is actually quite shallow, with most of its depth being just a single room thick behind the famous facade. The primary purpose of this design was to allow the royal women of the Rajput court to observe everyday life and processions on the street below without being seen themselves, adhering to the strict 'purdah' system. Visitors entering the Hawa Mahal will find a series of ramps connecting the different floors instead of stairs. The interior is simpler compared to its elaborate exterior, featuring chambers with colored glasswork and small courtyards. As you ascend to the upper floors, the windows offer different perspectives of the city. From the top, you can see views of the City Palace complex, the Jantar Mantar observatory, and the busy Sireh Deori Bazaar. The constant breeze flowing through the jharokhas gives the palace its name and provides a natural cooling effect, which is a welcome experience, especially during warmer months.
