Explore over 100 ancient Buddhist caves carved into a hillside within Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park, dating from the 1st century BCE.
Located deep inside Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the Kanheri Caves are a complex of over 100 rock-cut monuments carved into a massive basaltic rock outcrop. Dating from the 1st century BCE to the 11th century CE, this site served as a major Buddhist settlement for learning and meditation. As you walk through the area, you'll encounter a series of caves of varying sizes, from small single-room shelters (viharas) for monks to large halls with ornate pillars and stupas (chaityas) for congregational worship.
