A historic 9th-century temple dedicated to Goddess Mangaladevi, from which the city of Mangaluru derives its name. Known for its Kerala-style architecture.
The Mangaladevi Temple is an ancient Hindu shrine located in the Bolar area of Mangaluru. The city itself is believed to have derived its name from the temple's presiding deity, Goddess Mangaladevi, a form of Shakti. Constructed in the traditional Kerala style of architecture, the main structure is made largely of wood with a distinctive copper-plated roof. The atmosphere inside the complex is generally calm and invites quiet reflection, standing in contrast to the city life outside its walls. Visitors enter a courtyard that leads to the main shrine, which houses the central deity. The complex also includes smaller shrines dedicated to other deities and a large temple tank. People visit not just for worship but also to appreciate its historical roots and unique architectural style, which is uncommon for temples in this specific region of Karnataka. The temple is especially active during the Navaratri festival, when special rituals and cultural programs take place.
