Overview

Mirjan Fort is an impressive historical structure located on the banks of the Aghanashini River. Constructed mainly from laterite stone, the fort covers a wide area and is characterized by its high walls, circular bastions, and a surrounding moat. As you enter through one of its main gates, you'll find a sprawling complex with remnants of a darbar hall, market areas, and residential quarters. The most striking features within the fort are its numerous wells, some of which are said to be interconnected by underground tunnels, which served as a water supply and escape system.

Best Time to Visit

The best period to visit Mirjan Fort is from October to February. During these months, the weather is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the outdoors. The post-monsoon season, from September to November, is particularly scenic as the laterite stones get covered in a thick layer of green moss, making the fort look very dramatic. Summer months from March to May can be very hot and humid. While the monsoons (June to August) bring lushness, heavy rains can make the pathways slippery and unsafe.
Peak Crowd: November to January, especially on weekends and public holidays when tourist footfall is highest.
Moderate Crowd: September-October and February-March on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April to August, during the peak summer heat and heavy monsoon season.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest international airport is Dabolim Airport (GOI) in Goa, approximately 155 km away (3-4 hour drive). Mangalore International Airport (IXE) is another option, located about 175 km away.

Train

Kumta Railway Station (KT) is the closest major station, situated about 11 km from the fort. It lies on the Konkan Railway line and is well-connected. From the station, you can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw.

Road

The fort is conveniently located right on National Highway 66 (Panvel-Kanyakumari). It is easily accessible by car or bus from nearby towns like Murudeshwar (25 km), Gokarna (22 km), and Karwar (60 km).

Local Transport

Auto-rickshaws are the most common form of local transport and can be hired from Kumta, Gokarna or Murudeshwar. If you are travelling by bus along NH66, you can get off at the Mirjan stop and walk to the fort.
