A pair of large cylindrical astronomical instruments at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, used for measuring the altitude and azimuth of celestial bodies.
Discover what makes this destination truly special

The Ram Yantra is a key instrument within Delhi's Jantar Mantar observatory complex. It consists of two large, complementary cylindrical structures, both open to the sky. Each structure has a central pillar, or gnomon, of the same height as its walls. The floor and the inside of the walls are marked with calibrated scales. Visitors can walk inside these structures and observe the intricate design firsthand. The purpose of the Ram Yantra was to measure the altitude (the angle above the horizon) and the azimuth (the horizontal angle from a cardinal direction) of celestial objects like the sun, moon, and stars.
