An ancient, functioning Hindu temple in Hampi dedicated to Lord Shiva, known for its towering gopuram and sacred elephant, Lakshmi.
The Virupaksha Temple is the spiritual heart of Hampi and its oldest, most important religious site. Unlike many other structures in Hampi, this temple has been in continuous use for worship since it was first built in the 7th century. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Virupaksha, it stands on the south bank of the Tungabhadra River. The first thing you'll notice is its massive 50-meter-tall eastern gateway, or gopuram, which dominates the local landscape. As you enter, you'll walk through a series of courtyards and smaller shrines, leading to the main sanctum.
