Whitehaven Beach is a 7-kilometer stretch of white silica sand located on Whitsunday Island in Queensland, Australia. The beach is accessible only by water or air, with most visitors arriving via commercial catamarans, speedboats, or scenic flights departing from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island. The sand here consists of 98% pure silica, giving it a bright white appearance and a fine, powder-like texture that does not retain heat, making it comfortable to walk on even during hot days. At the northern end of the beach lies Hill Inlet, a shallow estuary where the shifting tide blends the white sand and turquoise water to create a visible swirling effect. Visitors typically access Tongue Point lookout via a short bushwalk from the landing area to view this phenomenon. The southern end offers extensive open beach space for swimming and walking. The entire area is part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park and falls within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. There are no permanent residents, resorts, or commercial establishments directly on the beach. Infrastructure is limited to basic composting toilets and designated camping spots, requiring all visitors to bring their own supplies and take their rubbish with them.
