Explore the Amman Citadel, an ancient archaeological site on Jebel Al Qala'a featuring the Roman Temple of Hercules, Umayyad Palace, and panoramic city views.
Discover what makes this destination truly special

The Amman Citadel sits on Jebel Al Qala'a, the highest hill in Amman. It is an expansive archaeological site containing ruins from multiple ancient civilizations. When you visit, you will walk among the massive stone pillars of the Roman Temple of Hercules and explore the large courtyard of the 8th-century Umayyad Palace. The site layout is open and relatively flat, though the terrain can be uneven with loose stones and dirt paths in some sections. Within the complex, you will also find the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses ancient artifacts discovered across the country. One of the most notable aspects of the Citadel is its vantage point; the edges of the site provide clear, sweeping views of downtown Amman and the adjacent Roman Theater. You will experience a direct look into Jordan's deep historical layers without leaving the city limits.

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination
The Amman Citadel has been continuously occupied since the Bronze Age, making it one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited places. Most of the visible structures were built during the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. The Temple of Hercules was constructed by the Romans between 162 and 166 AD, though it was never fully completed. In the 8th century, the Umayyads built a massive palace complex and an adjacent mosque over the older Roman foundations. Major earthquakes in 749 AD destroyed many structures, which were subsequently abandoned or repurposed. Today, it serves as Jordan's premier urban archaeological site.
The Citadel physically represents the intersection of major world empires—Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic—in one location. It holds immense architectural value, particularly the massive columns of the Temple of Hercules and the restored monumental gateway of the Umayyad Palace. For locals and historians, it is a focal point of Jordanian heritage that documents the evolution of human settlement in the Levant over millennia. Its prominent position overlooking the city also makes it a vital cultural landmark for modern Amman.
