    About the Destination

    Overview

Dudhsagar Waterfall is a four-tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa. Situated in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park among the Western Ghats, the waterfall measures approximately 310 meters in height and 30 meters in width, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in India. The name Dudhsagar translates to 'Sea of Milk,' referencing the white spray created as the water crashes down the steep rock face. Visitors typically reach the base of the falls via a jeep safari operated by the local forest department, starting from Kulem. The 45-minute off-road ride takes you through dense tropical forest, crossing several streams along the way. Upon reaching the drop-off point, a short 15-minute trek over uneven, rocky terrain leads directly to the primary viewing area and a cold-water pool at the base. The surrounding area features thick deciduous forests that are part of a highly biodiverse region. A railway bridge cuts directly across the middle of the waterfall, frequently crossed by passenger and freight trains. This active rail line creates a unique visual element and a popular subject for photography against the backdrop of the cascading water.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Book your jeep safari tickets online through the Goa Forest Department portal well in advance to secure a slot
    • • Reach the Kulem jeep starting point by 7:30 AM to get on the first few jeeps and avoid midday queues
    • • Carry a waterproof bag for cameras and phones as the spray near the waterfall is heavy and the jeep crosses rivers
    • • Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip for the rocky 15-minute trek from the jeep drop-off to the falls
    • • Pack your own drinking water and light snacks, as there are no food stalls near the actual waterfall
    • • Rent a life jacket at the ticket counter in Kulem; it is mandatory for the jeep ride and if you go near the water
    • • Avoid wearing white or light-colored clothing as the jeep safari kicks up a large amount of red mud

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • No plastic bottles or wrappers allowed beyond the forest checkpost
    • • No swimming in the main pool without a life jacket
    • • No private vehicles allowed inside the sanctuary; only registered jeeps permitted
    • • No alcohol consumption or carrying liquor inside the forest
    • • No feeding wild animals or monkeys along the trail
    • • Trekking on the active railway tracks is strictly banned by railway authorities

    Safety Information

    • • The rocks near the waterfall base are extremely slippery. Walk carefully and use footwear with a strong grip
    • • Keep a safe distance from the monkeys on the trail. Do not feed them or carry food openly in your hands
    • • Do not stand close to the edge of the water pool if currents are strong, as underwater rocks and deep drops are dangerous
    • • The 45-minute jeep ride is very bumpy and crosses rivers. It is not recommended for pregnant women or people with severe back problems
    • • Always wear the provided life jacket when near the water basin, even if you know how to swim
    • • Carry personal first aid and any essential medications, as there are no medical facilities inside the deep forest area

    Best Time to Visit

    • The best time to visit Dudhsagar is right after the monsoon, from October to February. During this period, water levels remain high, offering the spectacular 'sea of milk' view, while the weather is pleasant (20-30°C) and the jeep safari tracks are fully open. Jeep safaris are completely closed during the heavy monsoon months (June to September) due to flooded river tracks. Summer months (March to May) are very hot, and the waterfall's flow reduces significantly to thin streams.
    • Peak Crowd: October-January and weekends - post-monsoon water levels and pleasant winter weather attract maximum tourists
    • Moderate Crowd: February-May on weekdays - water flow decreases but still draws steady visitors from Goa beaches
    • Low Crowd: June-September - jeep safaris are closed due to monsoon rain, though the falls can be seen from passing trains

    Your Questions, Answered

Jeep safaris operate from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The last jeep departs from Kulem at 2:00 PM to ensure visitors return by closing time. The site is closed to visitors during the monsoon season (June-September).
The jeep safari route is strictly closed from June to September due to flooded streams. During this time, the waterfall can only be viewed from inside a passing train traveling on the South Western Railway route. Trekking on train tracks is banned.
Swimming rules change based on water currents and forest department regulations. Entering the water requires a mandatory life jacket. During periods of heavy water flow, entering the pool is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
From the jeep drop-off point in the forest, it requires a 15 to 20-minute walk (about 1 kilometer) over a rocky, uneven path through the jungle to reach the actual waterfall viewing area.
There are no food stalls or vendors at the waterfall site to prevent littering. Visitors must buy snacks and water at Kulem village before boarding the jeep. Do not feed the monkeys along the trail.
