Gandikota Canyon is a massive geological gorge formed by the Penna River cutting through the Erramala hills in Andhra Pradesh. Visitors enter the area through the massive gates of Gandikota Fort, an expansive historical perimeter that encloses ancient structures and a small functioning village. The main dirt path leads past stone granaries, a medieval jail, and stepping wells before opening up to the rocky cliffside. Within the fort walls, the trail passes the ruins of the Madhavaraya Swamy Temple, recognizable by its towering entrance gopuram, and the Raghunatha Swamy Temple, which lacks an idol but features an array of intricate pillars. A short walk from these temples sits the Jamia Masjid, an Islamic structure featuring two large minarets and a multi-arched facade. The primary attraction is the gorge viewpoint at the edge of the fort. Reaching the main vantage point requires walking over a stretch of large, uneven boulders. From the edge, the viewpoint looks directly down a 300-foot drop to the green waters of the Penna River, flanked by layered red granite cliffs. There are no artificial guardrails at the viewing edge, requiring visitors to navigate the rocks carefully.
