The caves remain at a constant 16°C year-round, making them suitable to visit in any season. Winter months (June to August) generally offer higher underground water levels, bringing the boats closer to the glowworms, and have far fewer crowds. Summer (December to February) brings the largest number of international tourists. Visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn provides a comfortable balance of moderate crowds and good outdoor travel weather across the region.

Air

Train

Otorohanga Railway Station is 16 km away. The Northern Explorer train connects from Auckland and Wellington, but requires a pre-arranged shuttle or taxi from Otorohanga to reach the Waitomo Caves.

Easily accessible by car via State Highway 3. Waitomo is about 2.5 hours south of Auckland, 2 hours west of Rotorua, and 1 hour south of Hamilton. Roads are fully sealed and well-marked.

Waitomo Village is small and highly walkable. There are no regular local city buses. Private shuttle services run between the main Waitomo Glowworm Cave, Ruakuri Cave, and Aranui Cave for ticket holders.

The caves are open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tours depart every 30 minutes. The total guided experience takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

No, photography and video recording are strictly prohibited inside the Glowworm Caves to protect the sensitive glowworms and ensure safety on the dark walkways. Photography is allowed in the outdoor visitor center areas.

Visit on weekday mornings right at opening time (9:00 AM) or late afternoon. The winter months (June-August) generally see much lower tourist volume compared to the peak summer season (December-February).

Ruakuri Cave is 2 km away and offers a different, photography-friendly cave experience. Aranui Cave is 3 km away. The Otorohanga Kiwi House is a 15-minute drive (16 km) and Marokopa Falls is about a 30-minute drive away.
