    About the Destination

    Overview

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a major geological and biological attraction located in the Waikato region of New Zealand. The cave system features extensive limestone formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and high ceilings formed over millions of years by underground rivers. Visitors begin their journey walking through the upper levels of the cave, particularly the Cathedral, a large cavern known for its excellent natural acoustics. The highlight of the tour is the underground boat ride along the Waitomo River. Visitors glide quietly through the dark waters into the Glowworm Grotto. Above the water, thousands of Arachnocampa luminosa glowworms emit a blue-green light, creating the appearance of a starry night sky on the cave ceiling. The environment is cool, damp, and carefully preserved to maintain the fragile habitat of these insects. Throughout the journey, guides provide commentary on the cave's historical and geological significance, sharing the Maori heritage connected to the site. The tour is well-organized with concrete pathways in the upper chambers, followed by a gentle, motor-free boat ride designed to minimize disturbance to the glowworm colonies.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Book tickets well in advance as specific time slots sell out quickly, especially in summer
    • • Wear a light jacket or warm sweater as the cave maintains a constant temperature of 12-14°C year-round
    • • Wear flat, comfortable walking shoes with good grip for navigating damp stairs and pathways
    • • Visit during early morning tours (9:00 AM) to avoid large afternoon tour bus crowds
    • • Use the restrooms before your tour begins, as there are no facilities inside the cave system
    • • Combine your ticket with nearby Ruakuri Cave if you want an experience where photography is permitted
    • • Listen carefully to the guide's instructions regarding noise, as loud sounds cause glowworms to dim their lights

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • No photography or video recording allowed inside the main cave to protect the glowworms
    • • No touching the limestone formations as oils from skin cause permanent damage
    • • Maintain absolute silence during the boat ride
    • • No food or drinks permitted inside the caves
    • • No smoking or vaping anywhere on the premises
    • • No large backpacks or bulky luggage allowed inside

    Safety Information

    • • Use handrails when navigating stairs, as the cave environment makes pathways damp and potentially slippery
    • • Stay seated and keep hands inside the boat during the underground river ride to avoid hitting cave walls
    • • Stay with your assigned tour guide and do not wander into unmarked or unlit tunnels
    • • If you have mobility issues, inform the staff at the ticket counter so guides can accommodate your pace
    • • Keep children close, especially in the darker areas of the cave and near the water boarding area

    Best Time to Visit

    • The caves are a year-round attraction because the underground temperature remains a constant 12-14°C regardless of the weather outside. However, March to May (Autumn) and September to November (Spring) are ideal times to visit. During these shoulder seasons, you avoid the heavy peak summer crowds (December-February) while still enjoying pleasant weather for surrounding outdoor activities. Heavy rainfall in winter can occasionally raise river levels, leading to temporary closures of the boat ride portion.
    • Peak Crowd: December to February, school holidays, and weekends - summer weather attracts maximum international and domestic visitors
    • Moderate Crowd: March to May and October to November during the shoulder tourist seasons
    • Low Crowd: June to August during the New Zealand winter, particularly on weekday mornings

    How to Reach

    Air

Hamilton Airport is the nearest domestic airport, 60 km away (about a 1-hour drive). Auckland International Airport is the primary international gateway, located 190 km away (approximately 2.5 hours by road).

    Train

The nearest railway station is in Otorohanga, 15 km away. The Northern Explorer train service runs between Auckland and Wellington, stopping at Otorohanga. Local shuttles connect the station to Waitomo.

    Road

Waitomo is located on State Highway 37, just off State Highway 3. It is a 2.5-hour drive south of Auckland, 2 hours west of Rotorua, and 1 hour south of Hamilton. Roads are well-maintained with clear signage.

    Local Transport

Waitomo Village is very small and highly walkable. Walking from the i-SITE information center to the main cave takes about 10 minutes. For traveling between different cave entrances (like Ruakuri, 2 km away), driving your own vehicle or taking the shuttle provided by the cave operators is necessary.

    Your Questions, Answered

Photography is strictly prohibited because camera flashes and unnatural light disturb the glowworms, causing them to turn off their bioluminescence. It also disrupts the dark environment needed for the boat ride and holds up tour groups on the narrow pathways.
No, the underground river is very calm and flat. The boat ride is slow, gentle, and motor-free. Guides pull the boat along using ropes strung across the cave ceiling, ensuring a completely silent and smooth journey.
The main chambers, including the Cathedral and the Glowworm Grotto, are very large, open caverns with high ceilings. Most visitors with mild claustrophobia feel comfortable, but the environment is dark and enclosed. Speak to staff before booking if you have severe concerns.
The caves remain open during normal rain. However, extreme weather and heavy flooding can cause the underground river levels to rise dangerously. In such rare cases, the boat ride portion may be cancelled, and visitors are usually offered a refund or a switch to a walking-only cave tour like Ruakuri.
Yes, many visitors purchase a dual or triple cave pass. You can combine the main Waitomo Glowworm Cave with Ruakuri Cave (which features a spiral entrance, allows photography, and is wheelchair accessible) and Aranui Cave (known for impressive dry stalactites without a river).
