Istanbul is generally a safe city for tourists. However, like any major metropolis, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like the Grand Bazaar or Istiklal Avenue, and take standard precautions against pickpocketing and common scams.
The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, it's recommended to carry some cash for smaller purchases at local markets, street food vendors, and for tipping.
Key historical sites include the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque), Topkapi Palace Museum, the Basilica Cistern, Galata Tower, and the Grand Bazaar. These landmarks offer a deep dive into the city's rich Byzantine and Ottoman past.
When visiting mosques, visitors should dress modestly. Women are required to cover their heads, shoulders, and knees; headscarves and coverings are usually available to borrow at the entrance for free. Men should also avoid shorts and sleeveless shirts.
It is generally not recommended for tourists to drink tap water in Istanbul. While locals may be accustomed to it, visitors should stick to bottled water to avoid any potential stomach issues. Bottled water is inexpensive and widely available everywhere.
Don't miss a traditional Turkish breakfast (kahvaltı), various kebabs, mezes (appetizers), simit (sesame bread rings), baklava, and Turkish delight (lokum). Trying street food like döner, kumpir (baked potato), and balık ekmek (fish sandwich) is also essential.
A trip of 4 to 5 days is ideal to cover the main highlights of Istanbul at a comfortable pace. This allows enough time to explore the historical sites in Sultanahmet, wander through Beyoğlu, take a Bosphorus cruise, and experience both the European and Asian sides of the city.
