Spring and autumn are the absolute best. You avoid the insane summer heat and freezing winter winds. · March – May • September – November
Thinking about hitting up Petra? You're going to do a lot of walking. Most people just see the Treasury and leave, but the real magic is up on the trails. I'm talking about hundreds of stairs carved right into the red rocks. It gets hot, your legs will burn, but sitting up there looking down at a 2,000-year-old city? Totally worth it. Grab some water and maybe a local guide. You can spend three days here and still not see every single tomb or trail.

The best times to visit Petra are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is beautifully mild, with daytime temperatures hovering around 18-25°C, making it perfect for long days of hiking. Summer (June to August) gets intensely hot, often exceeding 35°C, and winter can be quite chilly with occasional flash floods that might close the site. To beat the crowds and the midday sun, always try to enter the gates as soon as they open at 6:00 AM!
The easiest and most budget-friendly way to get to Petra from Amman is by taking the JETT bus. It departs daily at 6:30 AM from the Abdali station in Amman and drops you right in Wadi Musa, taking about 4 hours. A one-way ticket costs around 10 JOD. If you prefer more flexibility, you can rent a car or hire a private taxi (around 80-100 JOD one way). The roads are well-maintained and signs are in both Arabic and English, making the drive very straightforward.
A standard one-day ticket to Petra costs 50 JOD (about $70 USD), a two-day ticket is 55 JOD, and a three-day is 60 JOD. However, if you are staying in Jordan for at least three nights, you should absolutely buy the Jordan Pass online before your trip. Starting at 70 JOD, it waives your 40 JOD tourist visa fee and includes entry to Petra, Wadi Rum, and over 40 other attractions. It pays for itself immediately and saves you from waiting in ticket lines.
While many visitors just do a rushed day trip, you really need at least two full days to do Petra justice. The site is massive—over 100 square miles! On day one, you can walk the Siq, marvel at the Treasury, and explore the Royal Tombs. On day two, you can hike the 800 stone steps up to the breathtaking Monastery and explore the High Place of Sacrifice. Adding a third day allows you to visit Little Petra and hike the less-crowded back trails.
Comfort is key! You will be walking miles on uneven dirt and stone paths, so sturdy, broken-in walking shoes or trail runners are a must. Dress in lightweight, breathable layers, and keep local cultural etiquette in mind by wearing modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. The desert sun is unforgiving, so pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Bring a small daypack with at least 2 liters of water, some salty snacks, and toilet paper, as the restroom facilities inside the site occasionally run out.
