Dras

Patnitop, Ladakh

Known as the 'Gateway to Ladakh' and the second coldest inhabited place on Earth, Dras is home to the poignant Dras War Memorial.

The ideal time to visit Dras is from June to mid-September. During these months, the Srinagar-Leh highway is open, and the daytime temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 25°C. This period offers clear views of the surrounding mountains. From October to May, Dras experiences extreme cold, with temperatures dropping as low as -40°C. Heavy snowfall leads to the closure of Zoji La pass, cutting off road access from Srinagar.

Gulmarg is a year-round destination with two distinct tourist seasons. For snow and winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, the best time to visit is from December to March, when the entire valley is covered in a thick layer of snow. For pleasant weather, lush green meadows, and activities like trekking and golf, visit between April and June. The monsoon months of July and August see fewer tourists. September to November offers crisp weather and autumn colours, making it a quiet time to visit before the winter rush.

Known as the 'Meadow of Gold', Sonamarg is a high-altitude destination famous for its glaciers, alpine lakes, and as a base for major treks.

The best time to visit Sonamarg is from late April to October. During these months, the meadows are lush green, and the weather is suitable for sightseeing and trekking. May and June are peak tourist months. For those interested in trekking to the alpine lakes, July and August are ideal. The road to Sonamarg is closed from around November to mid-April due to heavy snowfall at Zoji La pass, making the destination inaccessible during winter.
